Will I have to walk on water?

The world had burst into life in the downfall of the forgotten winter. It seemed centuries past since the lake had been frozen over, and now the cool surface rippled beneath the soft caresses of the wind. It was an amazing sight for anyone. The lake itself seemed to stretch on forever, only interrupted by the waterfowl and boats that lingered in the distance. The distant mountains were surrounded in a haze, making it appear that it had no peak, but instead merged with the cloudy sky to continue forever over the horizon. The sun had reached it height at noon but an hour ago, and was slowly beginning to fall once again. Animals in the nearby forest made their occasional cry, and a pair of cautious rabbits crawled forth from the brush to greet the water's edge. They had reason to be wary, for not only was there a few men lingering in the vicinity, bringing their boats in for the oncoming shower, but there was also another potential predator, sleeping several yards away.

It was a fairly large animal, looking the part of a brute with his heavily muscled form and clearly masculine features. He was handsome, for a dog, with a fierce and noble profile that remained obscured by its position. His head was laying flat against his paws, and his dark eyes were shut against the sun that slowly faded beneath the veil of black clouds. The first rain drop to fall on him landed on the tip of his nose, forcing his eyes open and inducing the lazy rise of his massive skull. The large dog looked down the length on his muzzle to watch the moisture puddle and form as a droplet, and then eventually roll off onto the rich soil when he bowed his head to extend his limbs and push himself to his feet. The transition from the sleeping world to the waking one was slow, and Cabal took his time in spite of the increasing rate of rain that fell. Summer rains, you really never could predict them. And it had been so nice and sunny here too, which was why he had chosen it for an ideal napping spot in the first place.

The multi-colored behemoth lumbered forward with surprising grace for an animal his size. He stopped only at the water's edge, making sure that not even the tips of his onyx claws trespassed onto the wrinkled surface of the lake. Instead he stared out at the water, taking in the scene carefully, and testing the air for any peculiar scents as he did so. A light fog had settled on the muggy atmosphere, and the light rain was turning into and outright downpour. Yet Cabal seemed unbothered, and even took the initiative to lower his skull hell-ward toward the water. He inhaled the rich scent of the water and all that decayed beneath it before allowing a salmon tongue to slip past his slackened jaws to lap up several mouthfuls of water.

Cabal felt as if waking inside of a dream. To realize that one was dreaming, and yet to be fully conscious with the power to manipulate the surroundings. Somewhere in the most vague parts of his mind he wondered if this truly was a dream. He wouldn't be able to say otherwise unless he took the time to test this theory, but what to do? He pondered, and as these ideas and thoughts marinated in his brain the large dog's hefty body once again grew heavy, and his haunches gave into the sitting position that inevitably conquered his posture. The mountain dog pondered and puzzled in the rain, finding himself drawn into deep thought. If it were a dream, then he could do anything he wanted. He could turn this whole city into a paradise for the humans stricken with poverty. He could reshape the land itself, bring this warring land to peace, and stand above it all as a humble king. He could fly. But the most important thing that came to mind was that if this were a dream, and he could lift himself from the earth and into the heavens, why would he want to? The query forced his gaze to the sky, a silent request for guidance from the highest of powers. His mentor was no longer around, and it was such questions like this that bothered him to no end, and saddened him further at the painful reminder of the loss of his teacher.

Once again his gaze dropped to the water, and his haunches rose from the earth to leave him standing over the lake's surface, gazing down at the shallow depths. His reflection wasn't of any interest, for the falling rain unsettled the water's surface and distorted his image beyond recognition. Instead it was the lake itself that had caught his sudden interest, and the insightful brute was left in silent awe of the prospect before him. If this were all but a dream, walking across the water would be no problem. So a single adventurous paw trailed out, leaving his emotionless features behind, along with the steady eerie gaze of his dark eyes. His digits lingered just above the surface for several seconds before finally pressing down, stopping as he felt the calloused pad of his paw hit the cool moisture of the lake. Cabal sucked in a breath and stepped down, and his heart sunk with his paw into the muddy bottom of the lake's edge. This was no dream, this was the real world, as terrifying and deceptive as it was. The thought alone brought a frown across his dark lips, and the large soggy dog withdrew his paw from the water to seek out a suitable refuge beneath a dense canopy of trees.

"Hmmm..." It was a musing sound that trembled from the deepest depths of his chest. Cabal was simply returning to the real world, over-viewing in his mind what had just happened. Now that he thought about it, that had been a rather silly endeavor indeed. It even brought the faintest traces of a smile across his lips as his skull shook to and fro humorously. To him, all mortals were part of one goofy race, and he had just proved that he himself was no different. But even now as he stared out across the lake through the light mist, he still felt in a dream like state. He felt weightless, and for these precious moments he was free from the burden of the world that had settled on his shoulders. It felt good to remember the joy of simply being alive. No matter how ordinary of a rainy day this was for anyone, or anything else, this was truly a historical moment for Cabal. In his mind he thanked Vir for blessing him with the temporary bliss, even if he hadn't gotten the enjoyment of being able to walk across the water-- he'd settle for life.

The sky was blue as water. The grass was green as seaweed. The water was black as the wolfhounds onyx claws. Not a sound was made, not even a whisper. that was, until a hawk called out, screeching its lungs out. The hawk circled around the lake. Below the hawk, was an Irish wolfhound. Of 4 springs he appeared, with brown that matched the dirt.

He ran under the hawk, testing his speed. Unfortunately, he couldn't keep up with the powerful, fast raptor. But that was OK, this was just an exercise. The wolfhound was preparing. For what, you ask? Hunting wolves, what else? its what dogs like him did. They tracked down wolves, ran them up, and tore them to pieces. At least, thats what they did in rich countries. Countries where dogs were servants of man. Here, in Asmara, it was the other way around. dogs led humans into the afterlife: There, they were considered sacred. Only fair. And since "Sacred" sounds a lot like "Scarred" this wolfhound must be incredibly special.

As Scarred caught his breath a bit, he began to race around the water. At first, he started out slowly. At a steady pace, like a jogger. But then, he started to pick up speed. Faster, faster, faster he went, until he was at top speed. He then noticed a dog trying to walk on water. "Hey you" he said, panting. "Watcha doin? It looks like fun!"

Soft pads touched the ground snapping a single twig that once laid whole on the ground, not broken into two. The creature who had stepped on it and split it jumped nearly 4 feet into the air. One little sound could set the poor girl off. She was a dog or bitch as some called female dogs. Her tri-colored fur of chocolate, black, and white fur were quite glossy for a stray. She had sparkling blue eyes that landed on a bucket of fish from a local fisherman.

Slowly padding over she stuck her nose into it before the man waved her off. "Shoo. Shoo. This is not for dogs." He said taking out a treat from his pocket. He tossed it off to the side as the bitch turned and padded after it. Gobbling up the treat the human had given her a pat on the head and left.

The female shook her head guessing the human didn't want his fish to be taken. Ah well the treat was better tasting anyways. She turned her head toward the lake spotting a bird. She moved slowly to it as it preened it's feathers. She tried to not make a sound, but it looked like a waterfowl. Whatever it was it was at least meat.

When she felt she had gotten close enough she leapt forward. Before the bird knew what had hit it, it found itself in the bitches jaws being torn. A painful fate, but she wanted it end it's life quickly so it didn't have to suffer. Not long after the bird was dead. She felt too boxed in to eat it here.

She turned and began to pad off as the humans paid her no heed of her with the bird. She had killed it and it was hers. She wanted a more quiet place to eat it. She turned her head and the bird dropped to the ground as her jaw fell open. Two dogs... males too.... Oh dear lord no. She picked up the bird and quickly tried to slip past them, but not without stumbling forward.

Splat! Right in front of the large male named Cabel. Clumsy girl, Kaiya. Her eyes widened as she stared up at him. "..." No words came from her mouth. She was far too scared to speak...

ooc: So museless. ;_;

bic:

The large skull of the brute turned toward the pouring heavens to spy the hawk as it made its cry. He thought it to be rather odd that any avian would take to the skies in this pounding rain. To be honest, Cabal was surprised that the bird's wings weren't soaked all the way through. Generally they kept to their roosts on such a rainy day like this. Still, Cabal didn't put much thought into it, for he was quickly distracted by the arrival of the wolfhound. The thick-furred mountain dog watched the larger hound circle around the vast lake, drawing closer and closer as time went by. Yet the Sarplaniac stayed put in his place beneath the trees just off shore. If the wolfhound wished to speak with him, then the somewhat goofy dog could come over here to speak. Cabal wouldn't make the effort to start a conversation himself-- he rarely did. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy another's company, but at times it was difficult for him to function properly in a social setting. So when the running hound began sprinting directly into his direction, a broad frown replaced the placid look on Cabal's maw.

Scarred made his query, and Cabal was left in silence, save for the patter of the raindrops that fell along his skull. A brief expression of confusion crossed features thanks to the question. He didn't think that he even looked like he was doing anything mildly interesting. In fact, he was just sitting here. True, before he had been pawing at the water, but even that was hardly interesting enough to question. Well, it was for Cabal at least. This Scarred fellow seemed to be pretty easily amused, though. "Nothing," the Sarplaniac responded simply. His tones were gravely and rough, matching perfectly with his outer, massive appearance.

Just as he had given his reply, he felt a bump along his flank, and then the soft thump of a fallen body. Cabal snapped his head over his shoulder, regarding the female carefully while taking a wary step away from her. It was a retreat from fear, just one that would allow them both to recoverer their much-needed personal space. "Hello.." He offered slowly and carefully. Both brows were raised carefully over his intelligent dark brown eyes. The fallen female before him seemed to be a meek, and even frightened individual. He wasn't quite sure why, though, because speaking for himself, the young girl held no enemies here.
